Three-horned face of the Late Cretaceous
Triceratops, whose name means "three-horned face", lived in western North America at the very end of the Cretaceous, roughly 68 to 66 million years ago. Its fossils come mainly from the Hell Creek Formation of Montana and the Dakotas and the Lance Formation of Wyoming. It was a four-legged plant-eater about 8 to 9 meters (26 to 30 feet) long, weighing several tons, with two long brow horns, a short nose horn and a broad frill of solid bone at the back of the skull. A parrot-like beak cropped tough plants, and rows of shearing teeth sliced them. It shared its world with Tyrannosaurus rex, and some Triceratops bones carry T. rex bite marks. Triceratops is the state fossil of South Dakota and the state dinosaur of Wyoming.
From side profile to grazing calf
The ten images give you the whole animal from several angles, always with the three horns and the big frill. There is a standard standing side profile, a Triceratops walking forward, and one trotting in side view, which gives a sense of movement on a busy page. A three-quarter front view shows the frill spread behind the head, and a head-and-shoulders portrait focuses on the bony frill up close. Two poses put the head down: one lowered to show off the horns and one grazing. You also get a standing Triceratops looking to the side, one resting on the ground, and a cute baby Triceratops sitting, which softens the set for nurseries and baby showers.
Turning-three parties and dinosaur classrooms
Three horns make Triceratops a natural mascot for a third birthday: "three-horned" invitations, cake toppers, number-3 party banners and favor tags. Beyond that it fills any dinosaur party next to a T. rex, and the baby sitting pose suits dinosaur baby showers and nursery wall art for parents who want a gentle dinosaur instead of a toothy one. Teachers can use the set for a fossil unit that compares plant-eaters and meat-eaters, or for a lesson on how scientists guess what horns and frills were for. The resting and grazing poses work well on dinosaur-themed name tags and classroom job charts, where a calm animal reads better than a charging one.
Khaki, olive and soft gold
The coloring is earthy: khaki and olive greens with avocado highlights and touches of soft gold, matched most often to DMC 3013 Khaki Green Light, 472 Avocado Green Ultra Light and 734 Olive Green Light. These tones look natural on cream or pale sky backgrounds. Pair it with the T-rex for the classic face-off and with Ankylosaurus for a second armored plant-eater. Add a Mosasaurus if the party also has an ocean theme, and drop ferns around the feet, since ferns grew in the Cretaceous too. The dinosaurs hub has every prehistoric animal on the site.
Keeping the horns intact on stickers and cutouts
The horns are the narrowest part of the drawing, and they are the first thing a cutting machine or a careless crop will clip. When you use print-then-cut for stickers or cupcake toppers, add a white offset border of a few millimeters so the cut line rounds past the horn tips. For round stickers, the head-and-shoulders portrait and the baby fill a circle better than the long side views. Each file is a transparent PNG at 2048 by 2048 pixels, about 6.8 inches at 300 DPI, so a full-body Triceratops still prints crisply across the width of a 5 by 7 invitation. Flip it horizontally when it needs to face toward a T. rex on the same page.
Can I sell party printables made with this Triceratops clipart?
Yes. All 10 Triceratops images are free for personal and commercial use, including birthday invitations, cake toppers, nursery prints and classroom resources you sell. No attribution is required. They are released under the UsefulPix Content License, and the license page lists the full terms.
What did Triceratops eat?
Triceratops was a plant-eater. It used a sharp, parrot-like beak to crop low-growing plants and rows of shearing cheek teeth to slice tough leaves and stems. Two images in this set show it with its head down, one lowered to show its horns and one grazing.
What was the Triceratops frill for?
Scientists still debate it. The frill was solid bone, and ideas include display to attract mates, recognizing members of the same species, and some protection for the neck. The horns may have been used in contests between rival Triceratops. The three-quarter view and the portrait in this set show the frill most clearly.
Is there a baby Triceratops in this set?
Yes. One image is a cute baby Triceratops sitting, which suits nursery decor, dinosaur baby showers, toddler birthday invitations and first-birthday cake toppers. The other nine are adults in standing, walking, trotting, grazing and resting poses.
