A circle of leaves, from Olympia to the wedding table
Wreaths of leaves are one of the oldest decorative forms in Western art. At the ancient Olympic Games the winners were crowned with a wreath cut from a wild olive tree, while laurel wreaths went to victors at the Pythian Games at Delphi. Romans used them for military honors, and the shape survives on medals, diplomas and coats of arms. The olive branch has stood for peace for just as long. In modern stationery the wreath does a quieter job: it frames a name, a monogram or a date. Eucalyptus became the default wedding greenery in the 2010s because its gray-green color goes with almost any flower and it keeps its shape well after cutting. These wreaths follow that look.
Which foliage each wreath uses
The ten wreaths differ in leaf type and density, so you can match the mood of an event. Silver-dollar eucalyptus gives round, coin-shaped leaves in a full ring. Seeded eucalyptus adds small clusters of seed pods to leafy greenery. Willow eucalyptus has slender, pointed leaves for a lighter, more modern look. One wreath mixes eucalyptus with fern fronds, another is made of delicate ferns and soft greenery, and one is built from olive branches with small leaves. A mixed greenery ring carries a few small white buds for a hint of flower without adding color. For layout flexibility there is a full round ring of leafy foliage, a sparse wreath of dainty leaves with open spacing, and a half semicircle of eucalyptus that sits under or over a line of text.
Monograms, save-the-dates and welcome signs
The open center is the point of these images. Couples drop their initials into the silver-dollar ring for a monogram used across save-the-dates, napkins, cake toppers and wax-seal stickers. Wedding planners use the half-ring crescent above a welcome sign or a seating chart header. The olive wreath suits graduation programs, anniversary cards and peace-themed classroom posters, and it fits Greek or Mediterranean restaurant menus. Small businesses selling candles, soap or skin care can put a brand name inside the airy wreath for a clean label. Bridal shower games, baby shower printables and memorial service programs all use the same frame-the-name layout.
Sage, gray-green and olive
The colors are soft, muted greens (the most common DMC match across the set is 524 Fern Green Very Light): sage and gray-green from the eucalyptus, warmer olive tones in the olive branch wreath, and brighter green in the fern versions. They work on white, ivory and kraft paper and with blush, terracotta or navy accents. To add flowers, layer a bloom or two from peonies or garden roses at the base of a ring. The loose stems in eucalyptus and ferns match the foliage used here if you need extra sprigs. See the wedding clipart hub for more stationery-ready art.
Sizing text inside the ring
Keep text inside the inner edge of the leaves with a margin of at least a tenth of the wreath's width, or the letters will look crowded against the foliage. A two-letter monogram in a serif font fills the center well; a full couple's name and date usually needs the airy wreath or the full ring with a smaller font. Each file is a transparent PNG at 2048 by 2048 pixels, about 6.8 inches square at 300 DPI, so a wreath printed at 3 inches on a place card has plenty of resolution to spare. For wax-seal or round sticker sheets, use a cutting machine's print-then-cut with a circle cut line just outside the leaves, and test one sheet first to check the alignment.
Can I use these greenery wreaths on wedding stationery I sell?
Yes. All 10 wreath images are free for personal and commercial use, including invitation templates, monogram stickers, welcome signs and product labels you sell on Etsy or elsewhere. No attribution is required. They fall under the UsefulPix Content License; the license page on this site lists the full terms.
Do these wreaths have empty centers for text?
Yes. Every wreath is a ring of foliage with a transparent, open center, so you can place a monogram, names, a date or a logo inside it in any design program. One image is a half semicircle instead of a full ring, which works above or below a line of text.
What kinds of eucalyptus are shown in the wreaths?
Three types appear. Silver-dollar eucalyptus has round, coin-shaped leaves. Seeded eucalyptus carries small clusters of seed pods. Willow eucalyptus has long, slender pointed leaves. Florists use all three in wedding bouquets, and other wreaths in the set mix eucalyptus with ferns or other greenery.
What does an olive wreath symbolize?
In ancient Greece a wreath of wild olive was the prize for winners at the Olympic Games, and the olive branch has long stood for peace. Today an olive wreath shows up on diplomas, awards and anniversary designs. This set includes one wreath made of olive branches with small leaves.
