Tiny birds that fly backward
Hummingbirds live only in the Americas, from Alaska to the tip of South America, and include the smallest bird in the world, the bee hummingbird of Cuba. Their wings beat dozens of times per second and rotate at the shoulder, which lets them hover in place and fly backward, something no other bird family does in sustained flight. In eastern North America the one species most people see is the ruby-throated hummingbird. The male has a glowing red throat patch called a gorget, which can look black when the light hits it at the wrong angle, while the female has a plain white throat. Many ruby-throats cross the Gulf of Mexico in a single nonstop flight during migration, and they return north in spring as the first nectar flowers open.

Keeping the bill visible at small sizes
Each PNG is 2048x2048 pixels with a transparent background, about 6.8 inches square at 300 DPI. A hummingbird's bill is the thinnest line in the painting, and below about an inch and a half wide it can fade into the background.
